Triangulation of Hierarchical Hexagon Meshes (by using "triangle fans" as a basic feature of the triangle mesh) : Hexagons have emerged as a new discrete global grid (DGG) cell. Hexagon grids have advantages over rectangle and triangle grids: hexagon neighbors share an edge, and not a degenerate point; hexagon centers are equidistant, and don't vary with direction or latitude. There are many schemes to cover the globe with a hierarchical grid of hexagons.
