A Vivisimo (beta) implementation http://clusty.com doesn't seem to offer much visualizaton (yet?). Clusters are created dynamically by analyzing words in the text, url, and result snippet. These different views save you time finding the best results (what Valdes-Perez calls "selective ignorance" and also helps you see ideas and concepts that might go unnoticed otherwise. Unlike similar services that offer static images next to results, this "preview" version is live, and all of the links are hot.

"...every map is like a little snapshot of history; each is a visual history." - David Rumsey http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/09/27/DDG6K8UNN81.DTL He discovered Luna Imaging, which is known in academic circles for its research tools and has ties to the Getty Art History Information Program. "This is gaming technology, but no one is shooting anyone up," he laughs. The technology comes from Geographic Information Systems, developed by Telemorphic, of Berkeley. It also allows the user to compare maps side by side from different years, providing something of the march of history. His site is also branching into his original love -- fine art, with links to visual collections that number in the tens of thousands. Rumsey studied and taught photography at Yale, and his own Hockney-like photo collages adorn the upper levels of his home.

The Future Of Search: Beyond The Horizon; The ability to peek inside multiple file formats and index the information that exists within is imperative for search success. Microsoft has already announced a new way to do this with their WinFS XML approach. As the Internet reaches out to include more forms of media and information, search must be able to translate, interpret and then point us to the right place.
Secondly, search has to become more intuitive and easier to use. It has to be better at anticipating what we're looking for, without depending on us to literally spell it out. It has to find what we want, before we might even know what it is we want. We need a search engine that understands us, with all our interests, biases and notions.

Cartogram: (http://www.ncgia.ucsb.edu/projects/Cartogram_Central/ ) a distorted map in which the sizes of geographic regions appear in proportion to their populations, whether it's people or goods, or other items. (May 18 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). ) The choice of unit used to establish the so-called population-density function affects the amount of distortion in the resulting cartogram. For example, distributing a state's population over its entire area generally produces a map with more recognizable features than does a county-by-county distribution, because cities cause substantial local distortions. From http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20040828/bob8.asp : "So, people can make significant progress by applying an idea commonplace in one area to a field in which it has less, or no, currency."

With respect to maps themselves, the point has been made that all maps lie. ROSEMARY DOBSON'S "THE CARTOGRAPHER" poem 7 in The Devil and the Angel (a verse play: ca. 1945)...
The Devil woke me from my fit of dreaming.
"Old man," he told him, "you must take a journey;
Choose Heaven or Hell, for one's your destination."
He stared. "I seek for Terra Incognita,
The Unknown Land--I map the world this way"--

And would have shown us all his coasts and ranges,
The margins of the world, the Blessed Islands,
And where the uncharted, unknown oceans lay,
But that I spoke. Showed from my store of knowledge
Much that is past and present and to come.
The Devil, meanwhile, whistling inattention,
Leant by the panes and spied the market-square
Till--"Heaven," I said. "There's your only Incognita.
Got sir, all's known of earth, or will be shortly;
Ahead lies Heaven--a yet uncharted vastness,"
Then said the Devil, "Or else ahead lies Hell;
That too's for your discovery."
"Both, both!" he cried, and gathered up his compass.
We spread our hands and sighed at one another.
