Multipane browser to offer choice. The idea of mSpace is that by supporting in context and user-dertermined organization of information, we may be able to build new knowledge, ask new kinds of questions that aren't always readily expressable for a search engine. http://mspace.fm/ helps people build knowledge from exploring relationships in information, by offering several powerful tools for organizing an information space to suit a person's interest: slicing, sorting, swapping, infoViews and preview cues. While the use of a multipane browser is not in itself new, the operations available on it, slicing, sorting, swapping, adding, subtracting, detail view at each element for each category, is.
InfoViews ( Lots of information. One window) ; idea here is that people get a lot of associated information in one window. No clicking through openning and closing a menagerie of links and windows, trying to remember what goes with what.
Preview Cues. (Text is great, but sometimes, it's just not enough)
Choice. Organize information the way you want it.
News article : http://www.vnunet.com/news/1161405 The mSpace framework software is available for download from SourceForge.

How to protect pictures and graphics? There are JavaScript techniques to disable the right click; there are masking techniques whereby another (transparent) image is superimposed over the one you wish to protect; there are mouseover and mouseout techniques that flip the image to something else when the mouse is over it, or change the page completely as the mouse encroaches; there are a variety of other coding techniques that people have come up with to prevent downloads. (None of these techniques works). Regardless of the methods used to make capture off the displayed page more difficult, the individual files remain in the cache until they are purged. If the page can be displayed, they images can be saved.

Software Toolkits for Infovis : http://www.infovis.net/printMag.php?num=162&lang=2 including this Toolkit roots go back to PAD (around 1993), PAD++ . As a successor of Jazz, one of Piccolo's strong points is the ZUIS or "Zoomable User Interfaces" in which the user is provided with an infinitely scalable virtual interface where you can easliy go from the overview to the detail. These types of interfaces include the concept of semantic zoom by which the zoomed representation of an object is not simply the scaling of its geometric shape, but the shape or representation that is most suitable at that scale to convey the meaning of the object and ease the understanding of its nature. For example, at a certain scale level an object can be just a dot, at another it can be depicted as a labeled box while still at another it can be a rectangle with little characters. Any version of Piccolo can be downloaded for free.

GoogleMaps : http://maps.google.com/ the map itself, is broken up into a grid of 128x128 images (basically like an old tile-based scrolling console game). The dragging code (JavaScript) is nothing new, but the cool trick here is that each of these images is absolutely positioned -- and the 'infinite' scrolling effect is achieved by picking up tiles that are off-screen on one end and placing them down on the other end. The effect is kind of like laying track for a train by picking up track from behind it likely that they've pre-rendered the entire map beforehand; the map tiles are entirely static and prebuilt for the various zoom levels. Brilliant approach to an otherwise painful load problem (smallest tiles are about 1/10 of a mile on the side, and if the covered area is about 2000 x 3000 miles, that's 6 x 10^6 square miles or 6 x 10^8 tiles. An empty tile is about 150 bytes, complicated ones are around 3kb, but if we guess the average one is around 1kb, we're talking 6x10^11 bytes, or 600 GB; you could store it all on < $500 of hard drives). .. build a system that can keep it all in RAM, can serve 19 million maps per second. .... push-pins and info-popups are a different matter. Simply placing them is no big trick; an absolutely-positioned transparent GIF does the trick nicely. The shadows PNGs with 8-bit alpha channels .... JavaScript actually uses the XSLTProcessor component to apply an XSLT to the result XML. This generates HTML which is then shown in the right panel .... giant transparent PNG for rendering routes ... from http://jgwebber.blogspot.com/2005/02/mapping-google.html Slashdot discussion : http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/08/0926214&tid=217&tid=1

The Stereos tropic landscape: The Stereos tropic Spectator, that the historian Jonathan Crary writes, as a radical repositioning of the observer's relation to visual representation…The stereoscope signals an eradication of "the point of view" around which, for several centuries, meanings had been assigned reciprocally to an observer and the object of his/her vision. There is no longer the possibility of such a technique of beholding. The relation of observer to an image ( territory) is no longer to an object quantified to a position in space, but rather to two dissimilar images whose position simulates the anatomical structure of the observer's body." : http://www.onelandtwosystems.com/person-201.3354-en.html?note_form=1

Vivisimo doesn't use predefined categories. Its software determines them on the fly, depending on the search results. The filing is done through a combination of linguistic and statistical analysis, a method that even works with other languages. A similar process powers Grokker (15-person company), a downloadable program that not only sorts search results (combined from six search engines: Yahoo, MSN, AltaVista, Wisenut, Teoma, and FAST), into categories but also "maps" the results in a holistic way, showing each category as a colorful circle. Within each circle, subcategories appear as more circles that can be clicked on and zoomed in on. It takes a few minutes to get used to Grokker. But the value of its nonlinear approach quickly becomes clear.

Optical Art is a mathematically-oriented form of (usually) Abstract art, which uses repetition of simple forms and colors to create vibrating effects, moiré patterns, an exaggerated sense of depth, foreground-background confusion, and other visual effects. In a sense all painting is based on tricks of visual perception: using rules of perspective to give the illusion of three-dimensional space, mixing colors to give the impression of light and shadow, and so on. With Optical Art, the rules that the eye applies to makes sense of a visual image are themselves the "subject" of the artwork. M.C. Escher experimented with Optical Art, although not abstract, also deals extensively with various forms of visual tricks and paradoxes. In the 1960's, the term "Op Art" was coined to describe the work of a growing group of abstract painters including Richard Anuszkiewicz .

One main goal of the INA is to develop a new system of mapping our world -- one that does not rely on geography, but on more meaningful parameters... example at http://www.princeton.edu/~ina/maps/non_geographic/index.html developed by 10x10 creator : http://www.number27.org/ Good infographic examples : http://www.princeton.edu/~ina/infographics/index.html

Kitware, Inc. VTK supports a wide variety of visualization algorithms including scalar, vector, tensor, texture, and volumetric methods; and advanced modeling techniques such as implicit modelling, polygon reduction, mesh smoothing, cutting, contouring, and Delaunay triangulation. http://www.vtk.org/

Current data visualization leaders like Advanced Visual Systems Inc. (AVS), Antarctica Systems Visual Net and Spotfire DecisionSite offer further insight into data by demonstrating relationships that occur through multi-dimensional attributes and statistical patterns. This is an evolving field that shows much promise in the coming years in the enterprise analytics arena. http://webiea.blogspot.com/2004/10/data-visualization-now-you-see.html

"The programmer, like the poet, works only slightly removed from pure thought-stuff. He builds his castles in the air, from air, creating by exertion of the imagination. Few media of creation are so flexible, so easy to polish and rework, so readily capable of realizing grand conceptual structures."
"Programming without an overall architecture or design in mind is like exploring a cave with only a flashlight: You don't know where you've been, you don't know where you're going, and you don't know quite where you are."
"I've never met a human being who would want to read 17,000 pages of documentation, and if there was, I'd kill him to get him out of the gene pool."
